Security Tips On Internet Banking

After discussing about what one can do with online banking, let me now mention some tips on how you can do your Internet banking securely. One of the dangers posed by online banking is identity theft or having your personal banking details stolen and thereby losing the money you have in your bank account. Below are some steps to avoid falling victim to identity theft:

  • Practice Safe Internet Use — Do not open emails from doubtful senders and delete spam emails that ask for your personal information. Always keep your anti-virus and anti-spyware software up-to-date. When shopping online, go only for those with secure web pages (check the bottom of your browser for an image of a lock or look for “https” in the address bar). Do not send credit card numbers and other personal information via email.
  • Destroy Private Financial Records — Tear up or shred credit card statements, ATM, credit, or debit card receipts; bank deposit receipts; loan solicitations like that of a home equity loan; and other documents that contain private financial information.
  • Beware of Scams — Always be on the defensive with your private information. Never give out personal information to telemarketers or respond to emails from someone claiming to represent your bank, credit card company, a government agency, a charity, or other organization. If you think the request is legitimate, contact the company directly to confirm their claims.

In these days of spammers and scammers, it is always best on be on the safe of online transactions by ignoring messages that you think are too good to be true. If you did not bet on any online game nor join any online contest, do not be a fool to believe that you won a raffle or contest.
