This is my third successive article on the same subject, the Microsoft I-Cafe Program. I really felt that the program is one of the best that the Microsoft offered in order to entice i-café owners to legalize their operating and productivity software. The promo prices offered for Windows 7 and Office 2007 are attractively low and affordable by even the small i-cafés. The PhP2,299 for a Windows 7 and PhP999 for Office 2007 already include the Rental Rights License, which on countries where the I-Café Program is not offered, are already quoted at US$23 and US$45 respectively. The low prices and the procedures at which the software can be bought are reasons enough for even the die-hard pirates to legalize their i-café business operation. In the most commented forum thread that I started at ULOP.net, the few negative comments on program never mentioned about the prices but rather on small terms of the marketing program like having Internet Explorer as the default browser on the workstations of an i-café who will avail of the I-Café Program.

After the announcement of the worldwide availability of Rental Rights Licenses for its software, Microsoft Philippines has launched yesterday the Microsoft I-Café Program. The company says "Microsoft understands the pains of Internet café owners, especially the challenge of making the business profitable in the long run." and added "That is why Microsoft is offering Microsoft i-Café Program, a support and partnership deal that Internet cafés should not miss. Bukod sa (aside from) all-time low prices for genuine Windows 7* and Office 2010 licenses if you sign up within the promo period, you also get to enjoy various kinds of support, including bundled productivity and security tools."
After reading my blog post about Legalizing The Rental Of Windows OS And MS Office, I know that many of my readers got more confused on how to go about using the software legally in a business like an Internet café. Because of this, I made more researches on what Microsoft intend to do and accomplish when it quietly announced at the beginning of the year that it will finally and automatically allow renting out some of its software. What software are covered and how do their buyers get the rental rights licenses for them are just a few of the questions that will come to an i-café owner's mind. Can the old software like Windows XP and MS Office 2003 which are some of the more widely-used software by the industry still be licensed for renting? These questions and some others are what I will attempt to answer with this article.

The issue of using MS proprietary software always crop out in i-café owners' forums because Windows desktop operating system and Microsoft Office system licenses do not permit renting, leasing, or outsourcing the software to a third party. As a result, many organizations that rent, lease, or outsource desktop PCs to third parties (such as Internet cafés, hotel and airport kiosks, business service centers, and office equipment leasing companies) are not compliant with Microsoft license requirements. In the past, this prohibition are lifted by way of Rental Rights agreement which is a simple way for organizations to get a waiver of these licensing restrictions through a one-time license transaction valid for the term of the underlying software license or life of the PC.
